In-office whitening is done by Dr. Morren at your dentist in Austin. In the Whitening Parlour, our dedicated brightening lounge. He will clean your teeth, apply a peroxide whitener, then activate it with a UV light all while you relax and enjoy the relaxing amenities of the Whitening Parlour. This process may be repeated several times to reach your desired level of brightness. You can usually whiten your teeth by 5-10 shades in one appointment.
You’ll come to our office to have molds taken of your teeth, which will be used to make a set of custom whitening trays. Once these trays have been built, you’ll come back to pick them up, and you’ll also get whitening instructions and a set of whitening products from Dr. Morren. Simply follow your instructions to whiten your teeth at home, and enjoy professional results without spending time in the dentist’s chair.
The only common side effect of professional teeth whitening treatment is tooth sensitivity. This happens because your enamel is weakened slightly by the chemicals used to whiten your teeth. All you need to do is continue brushing your teeth regularly using fluoride toothpaste. This will help strengthen your teeth and eliminate sensitivity within a few days, in most cases. You can also use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste (Sensodyne) to help with post-treatment sensitivity.
First, make sure to brush and floss properly, and to see Dr. Morren for a cleaning every six months. This helps reduce the buildup of surface stains. You may also want to reduce your consumption of staining beverages like coffee, tea, cola, wine, and energy/sports drinks, or drink them with a straw. Using a straw minimizes contact with the teeth and can help prevent stains.
In addition to this, you can use a peroxide-based whitening toothpaste and mouthwash to help prevent stain buildup. We also offer touch-up treatments at your Austin dentist, which will help you keep your smile bright.
The entire Zoom teeth whitening procedure typically takes about an hour. Before your appointment with Dr. Morren begins, one of our dental team members will clean and polish your teeth. Getting a teeth cleaning before your Zoom whitening treatment ensures that the Zoom whitening gel can be applied to your teeth evenly.
Next, Dr. Morren will apply a protectant to your gums and lips. This ensures that any whitening gel that comes into contact with them won’t cause any discomfort. Then, he will place cheek retractors into your mouth. This makes it easier to apply the whitening gel to your teeth. After your mouth has been prepared, he will apply a layer of Zoom whitening gel to your teeth.
Once your teeth are thoroughly coated with whitener, he will shine a Zoom blue LED whitening lamp on your teeth. The light activates the peroxide in the whitening gel, dramatically boosting its effectiveness.
After about 15 minutes, we will rinse the whitener off of your teeth. Then, if necessary, Dr. Morren and our team will repeat this process up to three times, or until your teeth have reached their ideal brightness. As a final step, Dr. Morren will apply a fluoride varnish to your teeth, which helps reduce sensitivity. He will also give you some instructions on how to care for your newly-whitened smile, then send you home to enjoy your bright new grin.
